Professor Hurley Vale (Potions Master)
Hurley Vale is Hogwarts’ current Potions Master and Professor for the Potions class, hired in 2018. Vale’s philosophy of potion development revolves around resourcefulness and the belief that creating potions should be second nature, so students should aim to memorize and not to rely on recipes. While the school’s curriculum requires the use of potion textbooks, most students find that they don’t really end up using theirs in her class, to the dismay and delight of many. Vale appreciates positivity, quick thinkers, and those who think as far away from the box as possible. Brilliant, quick-to-smile, and a little too easily excitable by a successful brewing, while many students find her easy to approach and seek out help from when they are struggling with their studies, some students wonder just what her secret might be to always appearing so positive.
Vale is 33 years old, stands at 5’5’’, has dark skin with rosy and chestnut undertones and light honey-amber eyes. Her hair is voluminous with tightly curled strands that fall just before reaching her collarbone. She should have a British accent, preferably as close to West Country style as possible. Her voice is warm and kind and when excited her voice has a sing-song quality to it. She laughs easily and often, and even when being critical she manages to keep a light, even tone that is firm, but not judgmental. Her voice actress would ideally sound young and vibrant and genuine, with a very pleasant-to-listen-to laugh. Whenever someone engages her in a conversation, she should always sound delighted. Her voice should never sound tired or sarcastic or cross.
Basil Silverberry (Teaching Assistant)
Basil Silverberry is the Teaching Assistant for Potions Master Hurley Vale. He is a sixth year student at Hogwarts in the Hufflepuff house, with such a strong aptitude for potion crafting that he studied hard enough to be at the top of his class to earn a Teaching Assistant position. Generally speaking this position is reserved for seventh and eighth year students, and more often than not students in the Ravenclaw house tend to be the top contenders for assisting the professors in their classes. To that extent, Basil is well-regarded and looked up to by his Hufflepuff peers for achieving an honor that most do not associate as being within the Hufflepuff house’s reach. He is quiet, patient, and studious, and unlike Vale he’ll often tell students who come to him when they are having difficulty in Vale’s class that they shouldn’t be afraid of referencing their textbooks, and that just memorizing potion recipes doesn’t come so easily to a lot of students. The students who wonder about Vale’s near-constant positivity will often ask Basil if he knows anything about it, to which he always denies.
Basil is 16 years old, stands at 5’8’’, has fair skin with olive undertones and warm hazel eyes. His hair is short, blonde towards the ends with darker brown roots, and stands upright with a coif in the front. Should have a British accent, perhaps close to a West Midlands style. His voice is young and ambiguous-sounding – a voice that could pass for either a male or a female if Basil were not within sight of the listener. They speak clearly, formally, and are careful to annunciate their words. They are not quick to anger or to sound cross with students, but they can sound flustered or exasperated if students are trying to mess with them. They should sound genuine and confident, and when being firm with others they should sound like they are attempting to be as positive and gentle as Vale is with her students but not quite hitting the mark.
